Born and raised in NJ just 30 miles south of New York City (one of the fashion capitals of the world); Alicia Lavette (middle name) knew she wanted to be a part of the fashion industry somehow. She loved the glitz and glamour of clothing and accessories. At a very young age, Alicia knew she had a love for the arts, was gifted, and had God-given talent. She also knew she wanted a career doing what she loved.
As a child growing up, Alicia would spend endless hours in her room creating. She was always good with her hands and enjoyed drawing, writing raps, and doing arts & crafts. At the age of 8, her aunt introduced her to the sewing machine- thus creating her first outfit (a colorful heart print cotton jumpsuit). Alicia's love for fashion grew as a teen. At 16, she began working her first retail position at Joyce Leslie. She went on to work for and manage stores such as Footlocker, Gymboree, Arden B., BCBG, Caché, Aldo, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom (Collectors Dept.), and Paul & Shark Yachting. Luxury apparel was always intriguing to her. She paid close attention to the textiles used, quality, details, and construction of garments.
After being denied acceptance to FIT in New York after high school, she enrolled at Berkeley College and received her degree in Fashion Marketing and Management. With her years of experience in the retail industry and background in fashion education she became a force to be reckoned with. In 2018, she officially became a self-taught Fashion Designer. To date, she has over 500+ fashion illustrations and 200+ models. Since then she has showcased in over 25+ fashion shows including NYFW, ACFW, Miguel Wilson's Polo & Fashion Show (ATL). As well as doing fashion shows at universities such as Rutgers and Montclair State.
During the pandemic of Spring 2020 she generated over $10k in mask sales and networked relentlessly to build up her brand. Her efforts allowed her the opportunity of going live on Instagram with Daymond John (Shark Tank and FUBU co-founder) and Dame Dash (co-founder of Roc-a-fella Records and clothing brand Rocawear). She was blessed to receive business advice from the two moguls.
Since beginning her brand she has collaborated with and/or done work for a few celebrities. Alicia served as the wedding seamstress to VH1's Love & Hip Hop's Kimbella's bridesmaids JuJu and Cyn Santana. She was also the onsite seamstress for Cyn Santana's debut music video "No Question".
Alicia also has done seamstress work with several professional ice skaters including Olympic winners Nancy Kerrigan and Gracie Gold. She has created designs for Neyo & Crystal Smith's babygirl as well as rapper Bobby Shmurda's mother Mama Shhh. She has collaborated w/ IG famous wigmaster Tokyo Bradshaw, artist Lea Robinson, and TikTok rapper Isokenny.
Alicia has held internships with shoe manufacturer LJP International- distributor of several well-known brands. She also interned with celebrity fashion designer Christian Cowan during the creation of the iconic looks for rapper Cardi B's music video "Money". In addition, Alicia has also helped dress supermodels Halima and Maria Borges. Sales, Merchandising, and Fashion Styling always came easy to Alicia so learning to design was always a goal she wanted to conquer. Fashion will forever be her passion. The seeds were planted early and nurtured. Stay tuned to see what will blossom and what's to come from this up-and-coming Black fashion designer!
